This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:10-11
Growing up I struggled with having a performance-based worth. In other words, I believed that, in order to get the approval and love I deeply desired, I had to achieve at a high level. It was a recipe for disappointment and despair. That’s why the most amazing truth I ever heard was this: “God knows you fully and loves you anyway.” That truth really did set me free.
I know that loving people can be a challenge – some more than others! But we don’t love people because they necessarily deserve it; we love people because God first loved us. And that’s all the motivation we’ll ever need. So, as you and I reach out to and pray for our Kids Hope mentees, let’s simply remember that we are conduits of God’s love. We get to pass along the amazing, all-knowing, unconditional, freeing love that God has lavishly poured out upon us through His Son.
Prayer over the Student:
Dear Father, thank You for graciously and mercifully reaching out to me and drawing me to Yourself. I receive Your kindness and love. Fill my heart with it. And let it overflow through me as I pray for my mentee. My deepest longing is that they may come to know this life-changing love. Open the eyes of their hearts that they may see and understand the atoning sacrifice of the cross – the emblem of your amazing love. In Jesus name, amen.
